the Sunday nearest to the 11 November on which those killed in war, especially the wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45, are remembered in ceremonies and church services in Britain and some other countries

Culture:
11 November was ↑Armistice Day. The largest ceremony is held in London, when politicians, Commonwealth figures and members of the royal family lay flowers at the ↑Cenotaph in ↑Whitehall. People traditionally wear a paper or plastic poppy (= a red flower) on Remembrance Sunday and the days leading up to it, and the day is also called ↑Poppy Day.
